High in the forests of Garhwal and Kumaon grows a small Himalayan berry known simply as Kafal. For generations, it has marked the arrival of summer across Uttarakhand. It is small, deep red, and fiercely seasonal, appearing only for a short season each summer.
Unlike commercial fruits, the Kafal cannot be farmed in rows. It is found growing across the forests of the middle Himalayas, returning for only a few weeks each summer. That brief season has made it a symbol of patience and anticipation for many who grew up in these hills. Its brief season has made it a symbol of patience for many who grew up in these hills. Like many good things in nature, it arrives in its own time and disappears just as quietly. Once the season has passed, you simply wait for its return the following year.
"To know the Kafal is to understand that the best things in life are fleeting, wild, and deeply tied to the land."
A Name with Roots
When Ankush and Dhruv were searching for a name for this brand, they kept returning to this berry. It came to represent everything we hoped KAFAL would become: a deep connection to the Uttarakhand landscape, a respect for natural rhythms, and a commitment to things that aren’t mass-produced.
KAFAL is our tribute to that unhurried spirit. We don't believe everything needs to be made faster or in greater quantity. We believe thoughtful objects deserve time—both in how they're chosen and how they're used.
The Unhurried Hour
In the Uttarakhand hills, time feels different. Life often follows a quieter rhythm. Mornings begin gently, evenings linger a little longer, and the changing seasons remind you that not everything needs to move quickly. Our hope is simple: to bring a small part of that rhythm into everyday life through thoughtful objects and quiet rituals at home.
